New Review on Management of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

“Current concepts in the management of diabetic polyneuropathy” by Ziegler et al. was recently published in the Journal of Diabetes Investigation. The authors present an updated review of current therapeutic options for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Care is taken to delineate those agents capable of altering the pathogenesis of DPN from palliative alternatives. Among the former group, alpha lipoic acid and benfotiamine figure prominently. I personally recommend these supplements for my patients due to their efficacy and low side effect profiles. I’m also looking forward to the results a ongoing large trial being run by lead author Dan Ziegler, MD on benfotiamine. Should be very interesting.
